Quoting Harry L. Rinker and his website, HarryRinker.com, “The mark is that of Lewis Straus & Sons, ceramic importers, located in New York City. This mark was used between 1895 and 1917.Carlsbad is to Austrian (now Czech Republic) ceramics as Limoges is to French ceramics. Carlsbad was home to several ceramic manufacturers who specialized in producing special orders for importers such as Lewis Straus & Sons.”
The bowl belongs to the estate of a Tucson radiologist and his wife who were avid collectors of real life and miniature collectables. Their hobbies were renovating million-dollar homes and building miniature dioramas. The bowl was recently un-boxed by the couple’s descendants after being in storage for about two decades.
