    12” Tall Vintage Hand Carved African Sandalwood Sculpture “Village of Friends”
    This listing is for a hand carved African sandalwood sculpture known as “Village of Friends,” “Village Group of Friends,” or “Friends”.  The incredibly fragrant carving was obtained from an estate in Princeton, New Jersey and was originally purchased in Mozambique shortly after the civil war ended in 1992.
    Mozambican wood carvers hand carved this unique art piece from one piece of sandalwood incorporating the inner bark into the sculpture.  Sandalwood is a beautifully grained, fragrant wood that grows well in Mozambique's coastal climate.  The six (6) figures are adorned with colorful kitenge head wraps.
    The sculpture is in very good condition with no apparent damage.  The wood is fragrant.  Standing 11 ¾” tall, the carved slab of sandalwood is about 1 ½” thick, 6” wide, and weighs approximately 2 pounds, 6 ounces.  The piece was originally harvested at a slight angle which results in a slight lean forward of the six figures.  There is some slight discoloration to the head scarves due to age.  Overall, a wonderful one-of-a-kind vintage piece of African Sculpture.
